12/04/2008 - San Francisco, CA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The San Francisco Giants have signed shortstop Edgar Renteria to a two-year contract. Although financial terms were not released, the deal is believed to be worth $18.5 million.
"We're extremely excited to bring a player of Edgar's caliber to our organization," said Giants general manager Brian Sabean. "He is a complete player on both sides of the ball, a clutch performer and a winner. He has the hardware to show it with the awards he has garnered and a World Series ring. We look forward to seeing him in a Giants uniform."
Renteria, who takes over for Omar Vizquel, batted .270 with 10 home runs and 55 RBI in 138 games last season for Detroit, but the Tigers chose not to pick up his option for 2009 shortly after the end of the year. He had been acquired from Atlanta in a three-player deal on October 29, 2007.
San Francisco will also not have to surrender any compensation for the Type B free agent, since the Tigers declined to offer him arbitration this past week.
The 33-year-old Renteria, who just completed his 13th big league season, has also played for Florida, St. Louis and Boston, and owns a career .290 batting average with 127 homers, 817 RBI and 280 stolen bases in 1,860 games.
Renteria, a five-time NL All-Star and two-time Gold Glove winner, has also participated in 55 postseason contests and had the game-winning hit in the bottom of the 11th inning in Game 7 of the 1997 World Series with Florida.

Sportsbook betting odds favor Europe in Ryder Cup
September 19, – Despite holding a decided edge in the all-time series, with 24 wins, 2 ties and 10 losses, Team USA is the underdog again heading into the Ryder Cup in Kidare, Ireland this weekend, according to MySportsbook.com. The Europeans have captured four of the past five editions, including their largest victory ever, an 18 ½ to 9 ½ thumping in Michigan in 2004. Current Ryder Cup betting odds favor the Europeans to continue their winning ways; they are a 4-5 bet to take the title, compared to 6-5 for the Americans.
Despite being knocked out in the first round of World Match play by Shaun Micheel, Tiger Woods is predicted to lead the US charge and be their highest point scorer for the week, with odds listed at 9-4 that he outpoints all other American players, including Jim Furyk, Phil Mickelson and Chris DiMarco to name a few. Team USA has four relatively unknown players on the roster but all four are 2007 tournament winners and have posted some of season’s best performances, each earning over $1.5 million on the PGA TOUR. They include Zach Johnson, Vaughan Taylor, JJ Henry and Brett Wetterich.
The experienced European squad includes the likes of Luke Donald, Sergio Garcia, Padraig Harrington, Jose Maria Olazabal and Darren Clarke, who’s emotions will be tested after the passing of his wife to a battle with cancer. Donald and Garcia are in particularly good form and each is a 5-1 bet to lead the European squad in the points race. Donald has proven he can go head to head with Woods at a major event after a run for the $1.2 million purse at the PGA Championship. Garcia’s Ryder Cup credentials prove he’s ready for battle too.

In terms of sports wagering, the NFL is "the most popular game in town." The explanation behind that is easy.
It is called the "pointspread."
Many years ago, NFL games, as well as the more popular college games, used straight odds as a vehicle for betting. For example, if the Bears were playing the Giants, and it shaped up as a competitive contest, the Bears might be, say, a 7/5 favorite. If they were playing an also-ran, it might be 10/1. Well, there is a point where a line becomes prohibitive, as far as betting the favorite. And who would waste money betting an underdog that has virtually no chance? Such a setup did not contribute to promoting betting action.
But in modern sports betting, a "pointspread" is used.
A NFL pointspreads are exactly that, a pre-established point difference between the two sides that will, for all intents and purposes, create a handicap that evens things out, and in doing so, produces comparable wagering activity on both sides of that proposition. So in lieu of a odds figure in which to bet the team to win outright, the Bears might be a three-point favorite over the New York Giants, and a 17-point favorite over the also-ran. Now that the team that is the underdog can "get" points, there can be equal action on both sides.
In sportsbooks, this is usually done with efficiency by charging the losing bettors 10% extra - in effect, bettors are laying 11/10 on those games. So they are actually betting $110 to win $100. If they lose, they pay the "vig." If they win, they simply collect.
The establishment of the pointspread as the corner stone around which team sports like football can be wagered upon was truly what brought gridiron betting into the stratosphere.
